Dwadasa Jyothirlingas


Dwadasa Jyothirlingas 

            There are twelve (12) different Jyotirlingas bearing twelve different names in twelve different places all over India. A brief description is given below:


                   1) Shri Somnath Jyotirlinga : This Jyotirlinga is consecrated in the world famous Somnath temple. This temple is situated in the coastal region of Kathiawad in Gujrat State. Earlier this place was known as Prabhasakshetra. This is the place where Lord Krishna, having made himself a target of the arrow of a hunter, had left his body. 

                       2) Shri Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga : This Jyotirlinga is consecrated on Shreeshail mountain top, which is along the bank of river Krishna in Andhra Pradesh. 

                       3) Shri Mahakaleswara Jyotirlinga : This Jyotirlinga is in Ujjain City, Madhya Pradesh, situated on the bank of river Kshipra the city, Ujjain was earlier known as Ujjaini. This city was also known as Awantikapuri. This is one of the seven holy Saptapuris (the seven principal places of pilgrimage, viz, Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Kashi, Kanchi, Ujjaini and Dwaraka ) in India. 

                      4) Shri Omkareshwara, Shri Amaleshwara Jyotirlinga : This Jyotirlinga is located on the bank of the holy river Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. Due to division of Narmada river into two streams an island came into formation. This island is known as Mandhata mountain or Shivpuri. This Omkareshwaralinga is not made by human being; it’s a creation of Nature. 

                  5) Shri Kedarnath Jyotirlinga : This Jyotirlinga is located on the mountain peak of Kedar mountain of the Himalayan range. Kedareshwara Lord Shiva’s temple is located on the bank of river Mandakini on the western side of this mountain peak, and the famous temple of Badarinath is located on the bank of river Alaknanda on the eastern side of the mountain peak. 

                        6) Shri Bheemeshwara Jyotirlinga : This Jyotirlinga is consecrated on the mountain, Brahmaputra, near Gauhati. 

                         7) Shri Vishweshwara Jyotirlinga : This Jyotirlinga is located in the famous city, Kashi, in North India. This city has survived even during dissolution; because every time a dissolution takes place, God places this city on his trident, and as soon as the period of dissolution is over and the period of creation begins, He puts it back in its place. This city is also said to be of the primordial times when actually the commencement of creation had begun taking place. It is this very city where Lord Vishnu led an austere life and pleased Lord Shiva in order to be able to begin with the work of creation. 

                     8) Shri Trayambakeswara Jyotirlinga : This Jyotirlinga is located 30 Km away from Nasik in the west in Maharashtra. 

               9) Shri Vaidyanatha Jyotirlinga : This Jyotirlinga is located in the Santhal Parganas of Bihar. 

               10) Shri Nageshwara Jyotirlinga : This Jyotirlinga is located seventeen miles away from Dwarakapuri in Gujrat. 

                     11) Shri Setubandha Rameshwara : This Jyotirlinga was consecrated in Rameshwaram by Maryadapurushottam Lord Rama. This place is situated in the Ramanatham district of Chennai. There is a huge temple in the coastal region of Rameshwaram in which this Jyotirlinga is located. 

                     12) Shri Ghushmeshwara Jyotirlinga : This Jyotirlinga is the last among the twelve Jyotirlingas. This is also known as Ghushmeshwara, Ghusrineshwara or Ghrishneshwara. This Jyotirlinga, is situated in the state of Maharashtra
